L5R is Legend of the Five Rings. It's basically this fantasy setting of feudal Japan, so (more often than not) your character is a samurai, and there are _insanely_ convoluted rules about honor and maintaining "face" and all that jazz. It's very cool, but character mortality is high because people are squishy and there's a distinct lack of supernatural healing, as in most other games. A friend of mine (his character, I mean) once killed another character in what was supposed to be a practice duel with a bokken, just a practice sword, because he *gasp* rolled a critical.
