I figured I'd weigh in on my thoughts regarding episode 6 before it actually airs so that if it turns out to be true I can point to this timestamp and dance around in glee shouting I WAS RIGHT.
... and now of course I've probably doomed myself to be proven wrong. Anyway, onwards!
I don't even like to mention the title outside of a cut because it's spoilery. Gah, what happened to subtlety? Though it can go too far in that direction and we end up with Stargate titles that are so vague I never do end up understanding. Anyway, yes. The Doctor's Daughter. Show of hands for who else thinks this sounds like spork-worthy fanfiction? Yeah. I would like to state right out there is NO WAY IN HELL she is the Doctor's daughter by Rose. Come on, that would be _really_ bad fanfiction. And if she turns out to be, honestly I think I might stop watching because the show will have utterly jumped the shark.
Coming right after two episodes with a clone character and talk of cloning, plus the conspicuous shots of the hand-in-a-jar (how creepy is that, to still have around?), I say she's a test-tube baby. We've seen that the hand reacts when the Doctor/its DNA is near, when it started bubbling for Jack when the Doctor landed in Cardiff. It stands to reason that with that kind of connection it isn't such a stretch to use one bit of DNA to summon the rest, which would explain the erratic behavior of the TARDIS in trying to comply with such a demand.
The Master had the hand and used it to modify his laser screwdriver; who knows what else he could have done with the Doctor's DNA? I know I'm watching too much Battlestar Galactica if I'm thinking of him downloading his consciousness into a new body instead of regenerating, but hey, tLotTL can't honestly have been the end of the Master. There's got to be something. The woman's hand with the conspicuously red nails picking his ring out of the ashes of his pyre? He and Lucy _totally_ had a backup plan. And how more nefarious a scheme could one cook up than to create a child to use against one's enemy, and/or to use your enemy's own DNA to create a new host body for oneself? The Master knew the Doctor either wouldn't let him go or wouldn't stop searching for him if he just regenerated, so he somehow put himself into that ring. If a Time Lord can control whether or not to regenerate at all, how much else of it can they control? I haven't seen the episode, but I have read that apparently Romana "tried on" several looks before settling. Besides, wasn't the Master already out of his allotted regenerations and had resorted to body-hopping? Not such a far stretch, then, is it?
_But_, if the Master is engineering himself a new body, why make a young woman? Not really his type, is it? Though admittedly, the adorable John Simm was a bit of a departure from his usual look, anyway. And it _would_ catch the Doctor even more off-guard, which he loves. So... I'm not sure I'm completely convinced myself about the body-for-the-Master idea, but it's certainly a possibility I'd like to have out there.
So my easy guess is that she's been genetically engineered (why does that word look wrong?), as a River Tam-like superweapon/assassin and/or general foil for the Doctor.
But the longer shot, and the more fun, is that she was specifically engineered by the Master. Or rather, Lucy et al acting on the Master's behalf. It's a bit early in the season to bring out big guns like that, but stranger things have happened. Like unexpected!Rose twice already. They've alway been very careful about hiding when the Master is going to be involved, using clever anagrams and such. I've avoided casting spoilers like the plague after reading fannish speculation that "Mister Saxon" was "Master No. Six" and it turned out to be true, so I haven't read one way or the other (though of course it wouldn't be John Simm again, more's the pity). And of course an odd unrecognized anagram name wouldn't raise any eyebrows when everyone is focused on OMG ROSE!!! I'm sure there's some reason for her presence _other_ than as a smokescreen for the return of the Master, but it sure is convenient.
And it's two in the morning and I should probably stop trying to sound clever.
