poking at professors

So the Doc (my history professor from Cottey) asked me way back at the beginning of July if I would write a letter of recommendation for him, as he's up for promotion. "It would not be needed until late August, so you would have plenty of time if you are willing." Ah, he _does_ remember me. *wink* I was totally tickled so I replied "of course!" And then did absolutely nothing with it.

When August finally rolled around, I started asking him more specific questions about the letter, how formal it needed to be, what I specifically should or should not mention, etc. It sounds like there aren't any hard and fast rules, so his response summed up with, "probably you should avoid very colloquial statements like "He rocks" or something like that. :)"

So after finally sitting down today and writing the thing, I was feeling good enough about it that I thought I'd yank his chain a bit. So I sent him an email titled "The letter (and not at the absolute last minute, either!)" and the only text was "Hope this helps."

But attached was this little beauty: (as a side note, I wrote this in word format, so the filename is Doc.doc. Snerk!)

To whom it may concern,

Doc is way cool.

He’s so jazzed about his subject and he actually made history make sense. And when he was teaching medieval history, he was like a kid in a candy store. It was adorable!

He was fun to hang out with outside of class, too. He was the first one who made me realize that {shock} teachers are actually people. Because he does normal-person stuff like play roleplaying games and watch anime. I just about fell over dead when I found out, and my suitemate wouldn’t stop laughing the whole way back to our hall.

Anyway, he’s absolutely wonderful, and I totally wanted to take him back to California with me, but teachers’ wages out here are crummy. You guys be nice to him!

Sincerely,

P.S.
Not sure what’s up with all those sweaters, though...

Heh. Have you got a reply yet? Probably be amusing.

He knew I was joking (damn, I thought four years would be long enough for him to forget my moments of evil humor...), and has a good sense of humor, so he emailed me back "Hahaha! Thank you." Sadly his sense of humor is not good enough to have played along, instead. That would have been fun.

Yes, that was the fake letter. The real one was longer, much more eloquent, and less personal.

I hope he keeps this one around, though, just for his own personal amusement and perhaps some of the other faculty.

Heh... small world. I went to grad school with the female history prof who teaches at Cottey.

Wow, random! This post is so old, how did you find it?

Heh... I also applied to be Narcissa at RAR so I wanted to check out at least part of the competition. And was like 'well fux', I'm sure she got it since she has actual Narcissa experience, but then I saw the tag for Cottey and whoa... there you go.

Lmao! Small world, indeed.
