janetlin: (Languages)
You meet people in the most unlikely places... while participating in [livejournal.com profile] telepwen's comment spam, I met [livejournal.com profile] squyd, and look what kindred spirits we turned out to be!

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: Linguistics are so cool...

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: indeed they are

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: do you happen to know what sociolignguistics are?

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: not an official definition, no, though I surmise it's to do with the way language evolves as influenced by sociocultural factors. Words take on new meanings simply because people start _using_ them that way... (the evolution of "punk" has always amused me)

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: Do you think it would be an interesting course to take? Trying to figure out my schedule for next sem...

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: _I_ would take it, because it fits very very nicely in with my whole theme of historical linguistics

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: Yay!

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: because social influences have a lot to do with the way languages have evolved over time. My whole schtick is why words mean what they mean, how they have come to be the way they are now...

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: There's all the confirmation I needed. *registers* (I think it would be a cool subject, too -- I just wanted to make sure that's what it would probably be.)

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: both on a micro scale (evolution within a single language, and English is great for that), and a macro (because I am of the camp that all languages have a common origin, and they are all spin-offs of that universal source and/or each other)

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: Ee!

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: *laugh* are you falling in love with me again?

[livejournal.com profile] squyd: again, indeed. We should totally talk language sometime, because I <3 it

[livejournal.com profile] janetlin: *cheesy grin*
