Hey, y'all, I'm curious.

What's up with your username? How do you pronounce it (if it isn't fairly obvious)? Where did you get it from? What does it mean?

My user name is actually a variation on my magical name which is Réalta Dubh. It is pronounced: Rail-ta Duv, sort of. I got/took it about 5 years ago. It means Black Star.

It's sad that I've already got an .mp3 of me pronouncing my username up on my website, isn't it? Settiai.

The name itself is based on a term from Babylon 5 (Satai, the title that the character Delenn holds at the beginning of the show). When my brother and I were kids, we created a RPG based on the cartoon ThunderCats. My character's title (not name; that was different) was the Settiai, while his was the Sattaia - there's a slight difference in pronunciation (short "e" sound versus short "a" sound; long "i" sound versus long "a" sound). We didn't want to steal the word directly from B5, so we altered it enough for our purposes. Both of us still use the names we came up with back then for that game (Settiai, Sattaia, Ocelota, Leopardzan, etc.) for online-related activities.

Yep, yours is one of the ones I wonder about most often. I'm constantly "stealing" things from tv shows and books and just jiggering with the spelling, too.

I pulled my LJ literally from thin air a decade ago. I was 12 and playing SimCity and I wanted to build a new city, and I couldn't think what to call it, so I tried pronouncing a whole bunch of random created words. The city ended up being called "Zesphic Allova"

Then a few months later, I was signing up for something on the internet, needed a username, and since I quite liked the sound of Allova, I used that. And since then, I've used that as my handle pretty much everywhere.

As far as I was aware, it doesn't mean anything but googling it, I see it's a type of fabric as well as an Indonesian first name. Huh. (But I'll point out that my LJ is the very first hit when googling 'allova'!)

Is it Allova or Alluva or allOva?

I used to go to clubs and most of my friends are women. So, they would be gathered around and I was "Big Brother" and the protector from unwanted advances from creepy men. The males at the clubs would look in awe and tell me I looked like I was the Dean at an all girls school. The nickname stuck.

Um, I'm not sure how to pronounce mine, I generally say "aye oh nohne"

It's Greek, the name of an obscure water nymph I found somewhere in a book that specialized in nymphs. I think the pronunciation might be "aye oh noh naye", but, whatever, I'm not Greek.

My brain usually says, "ee-oh-nohne" when I read it.

Why a water nymph?

archaeogoddess: ark-a-o-goddess or ark-e-o-goddess, depending on how exactly you go about pronouncing archaeology. Sort of carries on from my other name, Erin the God, which I got after a fit of poor logic.

I have delusions of grandeur.

But I came up with archaeogoddess when I needed a log-in that was over 8 letters long and I wanted something different than the usual log-in.

Um, mine is uberboring.

My first fandom love was the X-Files. X, from the first season, tells Mulder to 'trust no one.' Well, you can trust me. :P and ... 1013 is Mulder's birthday, the X-Files was created by 1013 Productions, and ... it's Chris Carter, the creator's birthday as well... And it kind of rolls. =)

(as I use the only X-Files icon I have... sorry)

Aha. Usually when someone does something with numbers for X-Files it's 42 (I'm sure you've noticed that Mulder lives in apartment 42).

From: [identity profile] starfirenz.livejournal.com
Starfire has been my online and magical alter-ego since... gods, at least a decade now, and probably longer (before that, I used to go by either 'wildcat' or 'le_chat_sauvage' online - but don't hassle me too much about it - I was barely out of my teens at the time!).

Unfortunately, when I first arrived in LJ-land, 'starfire' was already taken, but I looked around and realised that none of the existing starfires appeared to be Kiwis, so I picked 'starfirenz' ('nz' standing for 'New Zealand').

As for pronounciation, I've heard a couple of people who were meeting me for the first time in RL but who knew me from LJ saying it 'starfire-enz', which is fair enough, but in my own mind, it's always 'starfire-en-zed' (because, hey, outside of the States the letter 'z' is said 'zed', not 'zee')

From: [identity profile] janetlin.livejournal.com
Yeah, my brain says, "starfire-enz" when I read it, too, even though I know the NZ is for New Zealand (and I don't think y'all will _ever_ get me to call it "zed")

I'll put mine here - I was called a fruitbat sometime ago as an offshoot from an argument that was flowing between others... and the name stuck. As for the kiwi at the beginning, fruitbat had been taken and being a New Zealander - a kiwi.... it flowed

cj_major: Exactly as it looks. Because I'm a Criminal Justice Major.

My JF name, that I don't use, is futuredaniel. Because at the time I created it, I was studying to be a Classical Archaeologist. And so I was hoping to be a future Daniel Jackson.

Don't know what I'll do if I do if/when I graduate.

Mine's pretty straightforward. It's a nickname my family used to call me when I was younger. I chose it because I like the sound of it and because it's easy for people who know me in real life to tell who it is.

Aliette Rowan was a gypsy NPC that I played in Mordavia. It's pronounced A-lee-et. She's probably one of my favourite role-playing characters, cheeky, flirty and slightly crazy. Much like me actually.
