Okay, so I think I just figured out what is _up_ with milk in this house.

1. We buy gallons of milk (skim for me, whole for Morgan and recipes). Morgan and I like to drink milk straight, and several of our favorite dishes call for it.

2. Milk is not consumed in the quantities expected, and goes bad in the fridge. I discover this the hard way. Yick

3. Next grocery run, we buy half-gallons so as not to be wasteful this time.

4. I finally get to drink the milk I was craving when I discovered the last batch was bad, rediscover my love for it, and blow through it at a rate of 2-3 glasses a day. You know, so as not to be wasteful. It lasts less than a week.

5. Next grocery run, we buy full gallons so as not to run out again so quickly. Besides, Morgan and I like to drink it straight, and several of our favorite dishes call for it. I try to hold myself back and make it last.

6. Milk is not consumed in the quantities expected, and goes bad in the fridge....

If only they made a 3/4 gallon, we'd be set. ;)

If in doubt, go for the smaller amount. I have done the same thing several times (though because [livejournal.com profile] the_dean doesn't drink milk at all, I stick to half gallons only). Fresher is better. Just go with half gallons. Otherwise if you get the full gallon, use it to make something else that would keep longer (like pudding which you can turn into pudding pops for dessert - still healthy!).

That happens to me. I used to drink it all the time, but less so now. I think I'm getting a bit lactos-intolerant or something.

Anyway, since I only drink a bit and only use a bit in my coffee, the carton often goes bad. Especially since it only lasts three days after you open it. GRRRR. But then I need to make a sauce or recipe or something that needs milk and I'm running down to 7-11 to get a carton of milk!

I need to be able to buy quarter liters.

Only three days? Geez.

Mom always tried to warn me off drinking too much because I'd make myself allergic. Does it actually work that way?

I don't think it matters how much you drink, I think that you are more likely to develop an intolerance the older you get. It's not an allergy, because it won't kill you, but you won't be able to digest it as well and you'll feel rather uggy. (It feels like it's curdling in your stomach... see, uggy.) Northern Europeans, especially Scandinavians seem to be able to digest milk the longest. They also drink more milk as children. Thus your mom is probably not right about the amount of milk drunk relating to the amount of milk intolerance.

It also seems that this only relates to cows milk. I think it's a lactose thing and I guess goat's milk has less of it or something.
