Star Trek: TNG is a long ago and far away fandom for me. I wrote fanfic for it before I even knew what fanfic _was_. Naturally, it would take something shippy to draw me back. I'd been eyeing up Imzadi for a reread, but then I found this in Barnes and Noble and decided that Picard/Beverly is way cooler at the moment.

So the premise is that Beverley is undercover working on a vaccine for a disease sweeping through the population of a colony planet in the Romulan Empire, which is on the brink of rebellion and civil war, and is captured. Picard then also has to go undercover to save her, as well as getting another doctor to create the vaccine before too many more die. Just enough shippiness (ZOMG smitten-and-worried!Picard is so adorable), but not so much that it's just absolute fluff.

Also, as I was putting it away in my bookcase, I was amused to see that the other two Star Trek paperbacks I own - while not being truly shippy - do both have Picard and Beverley on the covers. Heh. Suppose I'm pretty predictable, then.

I purposely avoided reading this until I'd seen the movie, and am glad I did. There would have been too many "Gyah! WTF are they doing?" moments for me to enjoy the film if I'd read the book first. So now I am able to fondly remember both of them, and the visuals from the film did help in my reading. Though I was consistently thrown a bit by the book's references to Mrs. Coulter's dark hair, and in my mind's eye I see Nicole Kidman. But personality-wise she was just fantastic. I found myself wishing that the film people had let the character remain as dark and scary, but I suppose that would have been too much for the theater demographic they were shooting for. They tamped down Asriel for the film, as well, but again good on the casting folks for choosing Daniel Craig, who was able to let that simmering menace show through just enough. I'm very much looking forward to both the next book and movie.
