Book #5 - The Hobbit
Feb. 19th, 2008 12:37 amJust under the wire with this one, as it needs to be read for my Fantasy & Romance class in... eight and a half hours. Whew. If I hadn't already read this I'm not sure if I would have made it through so fast. But yeah I caught all sorts of little foreshadowings for Lord of the Rings. And there was hide nor hair of Legolas. Boo. Though Thranduil (not that Bilbo ever gives us his name) wasn't as much of an ass as I remember him being when I read this while I was younger, and there were _way_ more dei ex machina than just the eagles. Holy hell. I cut Tolkein slack because he was a linguist, not a writer.
Oh, and my edition includes the first chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring, and after all these years I only just noticed the cute parallel between the first chapter titles: An Unexpected Party and A Long-Expected Party. Aww.
