Tonight was tabletop game night. Did we play? No. Then what did we do with our time? Spent a good hour and a half arguing over whether Firefly was better than Battlestar Galactica and the Star Trek franchise, and whether aforementioned shows were even similar enough to _make_ such a judgement. Then [livejournal.com profile] ktbee threw in Farscape, and I thought things would have to be taken outside. It was so unbelievably fabulous. [livejournal.com profile] gravilim and I were just sitting on the couches watching the whole thing (between the other four players - well, three players and the GM) in rapt fascination.

We were too busy passionately debating the merits of science fiction shows, to play our roleplaying game.

Can we win some kind of geek award with that?

LOL! That's awesome! LOL!

Just curious, what role-playing game to you participate in?

At the moment it's 7th Sea (buckleswashing ftw!!), but we also have been known to do White Wolf, D&D, L5R, and some Call of Cthulhu (though the main person who ran those is no longer around, so probably not too much of that anymore *pouts*)

Thanks. I have absolutely no idea who made it. I lifted it from someone who'd taken it from someone who didn't know, either. Great mystery of the internet, I supposed, heh.

L5R is Legend of the Five Rings. It's basically this fantasy setting of feudal Japan, so (more often than not) your character is a samurai, and there are _insanely_ convoluted rules about honor and maintaining "face" and all that jazz. It's very cool, but character mortality is high because people are squishy and there's a distinct lack of supernatural healing, as in most other games. A friend of mine (his character, I mean) once killed another character in what was supposed to be a practice duel with a bokken, just a practice sword, because he *gasp* rolled a critical.

oooohhhhhh! Is it based on real historical Japanese society? I ask because I'm writing a story set in a world that's similar to that time period and need to do more research into culture of the era, etc. Would this be a good reference for that sort of thing?

I'm not sure how historically accurate it is (since it's a fantasy setting), but I'd think it would certainly be good at least for flavor text.
