Am slowly catching back up to [livejournal.com profile] read_hp.

PoA is one of my favorite books in the series. It was the first - and remains the only - book I've ever read straight through in a single day. My friend Stephanie couldn't believe it when I gave her copy back to her at dinner, when she'd just loaned it to me at breakfast. I love the backstory of the Marauders and Snape, and this book is the first one that feels like we're really getting started on the overarching plot. Things are put into motion in PoA, people and things introduced, that are still resonating as of the sixth book, which hasn't been true for the first two books (which is probably why I don't like them as much).

Plus I'm madly in love with Remus Lupin.

Hee! I've been listening to my audio books of the HP books and I've just started PoA the other day myself. I don't know that I have a favorite book, but it's definitely my favorite of the movies so far. It was so brilliant and gorgeous as far as the cinematography was concerned. This was the movie that grew up the kids, etc. for me.

Hmm, see, I particularly dislike the movie, perhaps because I like the book so much. They cast the Marauders way too old (they should be in their early thirties), and spent more time with shrunken heads than with the canon backstory JK wrote. The movie doesn't say anything about the Prank, or how and why James, Sirius, and Peter became Animagi to keep Remus company. And that takes out the very powerful friendship theme she has running through all the books.

Oh I agree. There were a ton of really important details that were left out of the movie that annoyed me. Like WHY Harry saw a the patronus he did. And the climax was on crack. BUT the director in me was drooling over the visuals. It's just breath-taking. But most egregious of the movies so far has been GoF. I'm just hoping the next one does a good job with the book. =( I have no faith in them from this point fwd (the 1st 2 were the only ones that were well done adaptations). BUT I keep hoping, and I keep going. I love the movies as much as the books and try to keep them separate. ;)

Well, GoF was bound to be hacked to pieces. There's no way they could fit a book that long into a movie without heavy edits. OotP... I'm not sure. It's my least-favorite book, but in this case I'm thinking that movie!editing will actually be a good thing, because I remember thinking as I read it that there was a lot of blah blah pointless crap. 'Course, a lot of that might have been colored by the fact that Umbridge made me want to throw the book out the window, so in my rage I may well have missed a lot of the points of nuance that we all love JK for.

I will say that OotP made me fall solidly in love with the twins, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing them in the film.

Hee! OotP was my least favorite book too. I've never wanted to strangle a fictional character QUITE so much as Umbridge! I hope the actress (forget her name, but she's fabulous!) who plays her does it right. And I grew to like the book when I went back and read it again. The twins have the BEST. EXIT. EVER. I just hope they get that part right in the movie. But then the twins that play the actors have been played up so I hoping betting they will. *crosses fingers*
