Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest;
God is nigh.

Then goodnight, peaceful night;
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright.
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, goodnight.

Taps.

The US answer to the Last Post.

Both are beautiful.

'Tis. I forgot all about it until I was trying to take Morgan to school this morning, and saw my roommate's keys still here. No work = no school... *lightbulb finally goes off* Oh yeeeah...

It took a post from a friend of mine visiting your country right now before I could work out what the poetry and flags in my Friends list were about.

We have ANZAC day, a bit earlier in the year. The big service in the park is always run by the Navy, for some reason.

Eh... so is it a kind of war memorial thing?
P.S. The poetry is beautiful.

It's the little-known lyrics to "Taps," which I'm not sure is played outside of the States (though you might have heard it on tv or the movies). At any rate, it's the tune played both at lights-out and at military funerals. It's very slow and somber and pretty.

And today is Memorial Day, initially created to honor the Union soldiers who died in the Civil War, but has expanded to include those who died serving in any war or military action.

Um, ok...
That makes me want to write about Russian stuff of that kind. Will go make a post on it.

If you can read music...

I didn't understand a single bit! *cry* I've never learned music, and now I'm too old for it, I will never be able to understand it...

Neh, you aren't too old. Music isn't any harder than learning a language.

I always feel sad about not learning music too. I always felt in some way that I let down my parents... Mum tries hard to make me understand things like what a key or a chord is, but it never really works. I can, however, translate simpler sheet music into something I can play on the recorder, which I could show you if you want. That's relatively easy to learn, as long as you don't expect to be very fast at it, and it's a good first step.

Heh, I'm ok with being away from music. Just sometimes feel there is something I don't know, but that's ok.
*hugs*

The second verse is what we used to use as the 'final word' (or whatever) on our Girl Guides meetings. The ones in the evening, anyway. Camps and stuff that ended in the daytime had instead:

Thanks and praise for our days
'Neath the sun, 'neath the hills, 'neath the sky,
As we go, this we know,
God is nigh.

Yeah, in Girl Scouts we sang the second verse around the evening campfires at big gatherings. I never knew there were more verses than just that one until I went trawling online to make sure I remembered it right.
