(email from the course instructor) :

"Sierra:

You worked harder than any other student in this course, and your percentage was the top score in the class. The work done on the portfolio was certainly enough to bring the grade up to an A-. The introductory reflection was articulated well and contains much of value in terms of perspective, advice to other writers, personal aspirations. Congratulations. I truly enjoyed having you in class and would very much like to hear from you in the future. When your work is published, be sure to send me a copy so I can post it in a prominent location and everyone else can recognize your talent."

*happy dance*

I have not gotten a grade like that in an academic class in a _very_ long time.

Got the scores for last week's poetry: 90.4%!! The teacher says my poems were the "most sophisticated submitted." I, of course, am blown away by this, because I _never_ write poetry, and hardly ever read it. Wow. Here are the three that were in the end-of-week portfolio, for your perusal...

This assignment was to portray man's interaction with nature: Ex Cathedra )

This one asked us to make a list of ten highs, lows, and turning points that could be used for writing a poem. A ten-step journey through my "love"-life: My boys )

And the instruction for this one was to write a poem based on a photograph of a family member. This is an Italian-style sonnet (per Alan's suggestion) based on a pic of my brother at my eighth-grade graduation (he was eleven and not at all impressed by the goings-on): Little Brother )

Huzzah! I got the tags to work! Took me forever, but I did it. Now to revise like crazy for the final portfolio due Friday....

It's poetry this week for class, and I thought I'd share a couple of the journal entry assignments so far. (Alas, no sonnets yet, Alan)

Couplets

Home

There I played in mountain forests
Here I am trapped in open space

I traveled east for a family not mine
The sun returns to the west, and I envy her

My child is growing among people I don’t know
They love her but it still isn’t right

To return is to leave,
Abandon the one who brought me here

But this place is a cancer on my soul
I feel my life fading every day

Am I running to salvation,
Or just running away?

The Cycle

Little one born
Daddy kisses Mommy
he says:

Baby, I love you

First day of school,
Hugs outside the car
Mommy says:

Baby, I love you

Girl meets boy,
You know how it goes
she says:

Baby, I love you

Let’s get married
In a white dress and tux
they say:

Baby, I love you

Little one born
Daddy kisses Mommy
he says:

Baby, I love you

Woot! 88% on last week's writing assignment, though again with requests for additional detail. This time I knew there would be, though. This project was "creative nonfiction" and so I wrote the story of how my paternal grandparents met. Neither of them are available for comment these days (kicking myself for not interviewing Granny before she died last year), and I didn't have time to call & ask my dad. So there's a lack of the little flavoring particles like what kind of dress Granny wore to their first dance, what kind of car Gramps was driving, the songs on the radio, etc.

I scored in the 90's on all the rest of the work for the week; the daily writing journal, the reading discussion forums, and the peer evaluation workshop. The teacher has left me little notes saying, "your submissions were the best submitted this week" and referring other students to my responses in the discussion forum as the depth of thought she likes to see. Never been the teacher's pet before, this is kind of cool.

Huzzah! I just found out that I got 90% on my second story for the creative writing class. I'd only gotten 84% on the first one, so that's a big improvement. This gives me an overall grade so far of 85%, and we're only halfway through the class. Plenty of time to bring that up a bit. I'm so jazzed; this is much better than I was doing physically attending classes (could be because I'm actually doing the readings and homework!) *wink*
